FREDERIK MEIJERS GARDENS Exploring the neighboring area for places of interest took us on a 2 hour drive to Grand Rapids, a place Ide never been to before. It was the home of US President Gerald Ford and is where he and his wife are buried in the Gerald Ford Museum. But more importantly, for me at least, was the fact that a few miles away there was a beautiful park called The Frederik Meijer Gardens, a renowned arboretum i.e. a large plot of land ( in this case 125 acres) of botanical gardens filled with trees and shrubs grown for study and display. And although, at this time of year, the place was beyond the peak of its beauty and color. And although that weekend was particularly windy and overcast, yet the green houses and their exhibits of flowers, tropical plants etc, were incredible. And finally, if youre at all interested (!!), the city of Grand Rapids, on the banks of Grand River, once had rapids so fast that they stopped ships from navigating beyond it. Unfortunately, civilization and local architecture etc. put an end to those rapids.
