FREE CONTENT: Ten percent of the 330 manta rays in waters south of Lahaina have amputated or severely damaged fins, according to a Maui research and conservation group that is raising money to pay for research to track the fish and create a protection plan for them. The manta rays are injured when they get caught in fishing lines, said the Hawaii Association for Marine Education and Research, a Lahaina-based nonprofit. The tags will provide information on feeding grounds and pupping areas, The Maui News reported. This will help researchers determine where the fish are getting entangled. “We are hoping to work with fishers and scientists to find a win-win for both sides. We want to find a way to minimize the loss of gear for fishermen as well as protect the marine animals,” said Mark Deakos, executive director and founder of the Hawaii Association for Marine Education and Research.
