FREE TALK by Philip Nitschke. For anyone interested, Philip Nitschke is giving a free talk tomorrow Wednesday 5th March (on the West Stage) at 5pm at Writers Week in the Pioneer Women`s Memorial Garden in CBD. (Link to programme details below.) Nitschke will be talking about his most recent book which is a memoir, Damned If I Do, a chronicle of his early days here in Adelaide, his time in the Far North working with Aboriginal rights groups, and his campaign to have euthanasia legalised in Australia. It also covers the controversy that surrounds his life work. Philip Nitschke is the founder and director of the pro-euthanasia group Exit International. In 1996, he became the first physician in the world to administer a legal, lethal voluntary injection under the short-lived Rights of the Terminally Ill Act of the Northern Territory in 1996 – the law was overturned in 1997. Nitschke was born in Adelaide and after a career as both a land rights activist and a Parks & Wildlife ranger in the North Territory, he completed his medical studies. He is co-author of the international bestsellers The Peaceful Pill and Killing Me Softly, with Fiona Steward. Most recently he published the memoir Damned if I Do. He lives in Adelaide.
