FREEDOM FROM FREETOWN doc continues The Creoles being ‘sold out’ again into ‘slavery’? The Creoles of Sierra Leone are the product of the Atlantic Slave Trade era. Those who are Creoles today are descendants of those who were once Africans, and were captured and sold into slavery by fellow Africans. Could it be said that the Creoles on their return to Africa, on being given a small parcel of land in the mountain villages of the Freetown peninsular, are being ‘sold out’ again by the very descendants of their ‘brothers and sisters’ who had sold their forefathers into slavery centuries earlier? The Creole (or, ‘Krio’) of Sierra Leone are the largest number of descendants of the Atlantic Slave Trade that have lived in Africa – this is a unique situation; as other countries like Ghana, The Gambia, Nigeria, and Senegal, do have sprinkles of the same people, plus, edifices of that same era; but, only Sierra Leone has the large number of the descendants of slaves. A glance across the global horizon could get one to conclude that among the descendants of the Atlantic Slave Trade era that are today in the U.S., UK, Caribbean nations like Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, and in South America, and in neighboring Liberia, the Creoles of Sierra Leone have the densest concentration (in per capita terms) of highly qualified professionals – as doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, administrators, etc. How the Creoles of Sierra Leone have managed this feat living in a poor country like Sierra Leone in Africa should be explored, and, popularized, not only locally, but, to descendants of the Atlantic Slave Trade living in the UK and the Americas...that are largely educationally and professionally backward.....
