FRIDAY, 11/28/14 POETRY. Psalm 2 “Passion!” (By Barry) WORSHIP: Special song today! https://youtube/watch?v=mTdoqa4N8yg SCRIPTURE: blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Psa&c=2&t=NLT Today’s passage in Psalm 2 is deep. Here’s what I would like to ask you to do: As you read today’s passage, please read it as a description of an emotional God, a God who laughs, and gets angry, and who invites us to love Him passionately, too! 1 Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? 2 The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the LORD and against his anointed one. 3 “Let us break their chains,” they cry, “and free ourselves from slavery to God.” 4 But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury. 6 For the Lord declares, “I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on my holy mountain.” 7 The king proclaims the LORD’s decree: “The LORD said to me, ‘You are my son. Today I have become your Father. 8 Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession. 9 You will break them with an iron rod and smash them like clay pots.’” 10 Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth! 11 Serve the LORD with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities— for his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him! THOUGHTS & QUESTIONS: —1. The book of Psalms is the biggest book in the Bible. There are 150 individual psalms (which were originally songs) in this book, and it is divided into five sections. King David was the main author of the songs in this book, but as we work our way through, we will see other writers, as well. —2. Do you happen to have a favorite psalm? I have been a follower of Jesus for a long time, and there are quite a few psalms that I love. Psalm 18 is my favorite. We will probably study that one sometime in the spring. —3. So, can you see some of the emotions that God expresses in Psalm 2? Can you name some of them? —4. Do you normally think of God as emotional? Do you consider Him to be a passionate God? Why or why not? —5. What is this psalm about? What is its point? (You may need to read it more than once. Don’t rush. What is it talking about?) —6. God is passionate. He is full of emotion. Guess what? He is passionate about YOU. DIGGING DEEPER: —7. This psalm starts off with the question about why so many people (or nations) are angry, and why so many people are rebelling against God? Can you think of some examples of our rebelliousness? —8. Do you see God’s reaction to this rebellion? Two words: Laughter. Anger. What are your thoughts on that? —9. Does God laugh? Does He cry? Does He get angry? Why or why not? —10. God IS passionate. He is an emotional God. How about you? Are YOU passionate toward Him? PRAYER: Can I ask you today to use our normal “A.C.T.S.” acronym (Adore, Confess, Thank, Ask) in your prayer time, but to also keep in mind that God is a God of passion, as we talked about today. As you pray, talk to Him passionately, too!
