FRIDAY, January 17 John 2:11. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. Several years ago I edited a book of narratives in which the contributors shared their stories of coming to know the personal love of God. Those sharing had some prior knowledge of God and some sense of God’s love for the whole world, but the book asked them to share the experience of how they came to know God’s love in a personal way. Each encounter was different, life-changing, and, in some cases, life-saving, but the writers told how God was revealed to them and how they came to know God in a very real way. When Jesus and his disciples attended the wedding in Cana, the disciples had answered Jesus’ call to follow and had some sense of who he was, but they did not fully know him. Although Jesus said his time had not yet come, we know, whether out of obedience to his earthly mother or in answer to the call of his heavenly father, he changed water into wine. When his disciples saw this miracle, this first sign of his glory, they believed. God knows and loves each of us personally and will provide whatever experience is needed to bring us to belief.
