FRIDAY MARCH 21 EDITION: Now then folks.... in tomorrows paper, we report that council cuts mean a Heckmondwike music festival is at risk unless sponsors come forward to plug a funding shortfall. Heckyfest, run under the Crown of Lights music events umbrella, is supported though the same soon-to-be-axed pot that also gives money to the Cleckheaton Folk Festival. Organisers hope businesses will come forward to help while the end of council funding highlights the continuing spending squeeze. Elsewhere, we have special in-depth reports on heath and education, starting with a look at a potential shortage of secondary school places from opposing viewpoints. A headteacher claims there is no shortage across Batley, Birstall, Gomersal and Birkenshaw while a councillor says the area faces a long-term time-bomb. A&E backlogs at Dewsbury District Hospital have been dealt with through an action plan first revealed exclusively by The Press last month. We also look at the community care system doctors want in place before A&E at the Staincliffe-based hospital is reduced to a minor injuries unit. And we report claims Cleckheaton should have a new supermarket to challenge the dominance of Tesco as demolition was finished at a derelict factory site theyve put up for sale. In sport, Batley Bulldogs coach John Kear says he couldn’t have picked the Challenge Cup draw better himself. Meanwhile, Batley are likely to be without Mark Applegarth for the fixture as he struggles with a knee injury picked up against Kells, and Miles Greenwood is still a doubt. Dewsbury Rams have drawn defending champions Wigan Warriors in the fourth round of the Tetleys Challenge Cup. Plus we have all the reaction from the two Championship sides weekend games, with both teams suffering defeats. Press Sport also has all the action from a number of junior rugby league sides including Birstall Victoria, Dewsbury Moor and Thornhill Trojans. Meanwhile, Thornhill Trojans win over Keighley ended in an abandonment after a spectator head-butted a Trojans player. In rugby union, Cleckheatons winning run came to an abrupt end with a comprehensive Yorkshire Cup defeat at Wharfedale. Its all in The Press, the only newspaper that has all of North Kirklees covered... were out in all the usual places in the morning, so give us a right good read. #PressFridays
