Tamizi (left) explaining the potential use of bamboo; and Abd Razak (right) describing the characteristics of bamboo species. 27 August 2014 (Wednesday) – Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) recently conducted a three-day bamboo species identification workshop at the Bukit Bakar Forestry Training Centre in Machang, Kelantan, for 25 forestry staff from all over the peninsula. The aim of the workhop, held from 19 to 21 August, was to introduce the various bamboo species found in the forests of Peninsular Malaysia and equip participants with the knowledge and capacity to identify these species for the National Forest Inventory. Organised in collaboration with Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia (FDPM), the workshop programme included lectures and hands-on field activities. FRIM researchers, serving as the workshop instructors, were bamboo silviculturist, Abd Razak Othman and FRIM wood quality and non-wood products programme head, Dr Mohd Tamizi Mustafa. For the first day, Abd Razak introduced the basic characteristics of bamboo species for identification, and the cultivation and management bamboo; whilst Mohd Tamizi spoke on the development of bamboo products and bamboo preservation methods. The participants were divided into five groups to conduct hands-on field identification and collection of bamboo species; as well as the preparation of sample specimens for herbarium collections on the second day. On the final day, each of the groups gave a presentation of the respective field identification and collection findings.
