FROM CHARLES FRONT PORCH: When I was sitting on the porch - TopicsExpress

FROM CHARLES FRONT PORCH: When I was sitting on the porch having my evening tea last night all I could think of was Baloney, Bologna and Pot Pies. I guess we could call this column Baloney which would be accurate however it might result in a funny chat and I can make a couple points at the same time. We have become use to baloney from politicians but I enjoy their baloney. Baloney is normally used when they are avoiding a question which at times is necessary. I use baloney when I don’t want to answer a question but I never lie. I can accept some baloney but not lies. We ask our elected leaders some stupid questions and stupidity should be answered with stupidity. Many things politicians know we have no business knowing. I am not sure I want or need to know what they know about Ebola. It is possible we as a nation would be in a panic if we knew. What concerns me is they are lying. I could accept none of your business but not a lie. I know many politicians and ask them what made you run, what do you expect to accomplish and how do you explain to the people if you don’t accomplish your goals. The best answer ever came from a Democrat. He told me you have to be realistic. You cannot get a laundry list done so you must have one item that is your main objective and if you get that passed your term has been a success. You must vote for some bills you don’t like to secure support from your colleagues. This is the way things are supposed to work. Give and Take however you must have someone sane to give to which we do not have today with Democrats. The first time someone runs for office you only have his character to judge. If for a higher office or reelection they have a record. Ideological ideas must be a part of the equation but never the deciding factor. We have no logical reason reelecting men like McCain and Graham. Reelecting a maggot like Obama shows we are a nation of fools. That is the kindest way to put it. I could write a book about Pot Pies. There is two things I will not eat. Chicken is one. When I was a child it was my job to run down a rooster on Sunday morning and ring its neck for Sunday dinner. I can still smell the stench as my mother dipped that bird in scalding water and plucked the feathers. The other is Pot Pies. This is a long story so I will give you the condensed version. I have never had children but I married a woman who had three small children from a previous marriage. I am the only father these kids have ever known. It is sad but they have forgotten about me. I understand as they all have families of their own now but darn I sure would love to hear their voice and share their lives. I might be able to help them over some hurdles and prevent them from making the mistakes I made. Maturity is an advantage. The older girl was born with a heart valve problem which we didn’t know about until she was 8. Without several major surgeries she would have died in her early teens. I had a good job with insurance however it didn’t take long to max out the coverage. In those days you didn’t have all the free and reduced cost medical care like today. Either it was covered by insurance or you wrote a check. I unloaded potato trucks, moped floors and cleaned grease traps to earn money were we could pay the doctor. At one point we were down to less than 20.00 and it was three weeks until payday. My wife saw pot pies were on sale for 10 cents. She took 10.00, went to the store and spent all on those pot pies. That was breakfast, lunch and dinner until payday. I throw up at the thought of a pot pie. A couple weeks ago I was at the grocery and they had pot pies on sale for 37 cents. I noticed a woman who was neatly dressed and clean but you could tell her dress was thrift store vintage filling her shopping cart with pot pies. I mean she emptied the display case. It didn’t hit me at the moment but later I wonder what her story was. The one thing I know was she didn’t have a fetish for pot pies that large. I wish I knew her story. When I got to the checkout she was inline in front of me. There was a woman in front of her that had Shrimp, A Roast, Hamburger and what I think was a couple steaks, Coke and ice cream. The total bill was over 75.00. She whipped out her food stamp card, paid and left. The woman with all the pot pied paid in cash. We live in a great and prosperous (at least pre Obama) where there is no need for any person to go to bed hungry but should I as a taxpayer pay for steak and Ice Cream when another had to eat pot pies? I don’t think that is what our country is about. We limit what can be bought with the Women, Infant and children WIC vouchers. Why not food stamps? Why not limit it to bologna, weenies and SPAM. SPAM fed our troops in WWII. Heck an argument can be made that SPAM won the war. Rather than sliced bread why not a bag of flour. It worked when I was a child. Many mornings breakfast was limited to a fresh baked biscuit, a couple spoons of sugar with either coffee or water poured over it because we couldn’t afford syrup. Even if we could Molasses would have tasted better. Sheriff Arpaio of Maricopa County Arizona got tired of his jail becoming a revolving door where prisoners left to only come back with a new charge a couple days later. His solution was to make jail jail where they didn’t want to return. He fed them a bowl of oatmeal in the morning no salt and pepper, butter or milk, Just oat meal and bologna sandwiches with a piece of fruit for lunch and dinner. The liberals and ACLU went nuts but the prisoners got the message. I am all for helping those in need but not sustain g a lifestyle of dependence on my Tax Dollars. I have been a volunteer for The Salvation Army for years. I have many a night in 10 degree weather went out and brought our veterans and others, from under bridges and homeless camps into the warmth of our facilitates so they did not freeze. I have seen, when we had Angle Tree sign up, people driving up in a new Lincoln or Cadillac to get free Christmas for their children. When serving Thanksgiving dinner I have seen people with a 6 figure incomes lining up for a free meal. I am tired of people eating steak and Ice Cream on my dime while someone is having to eat pot pies to pay for the steak and Ice Cream. I am sure when these people line up at the pearly gates and Saint Peter opens that book of life for God to review he will frown. God would not be a just God unless he has some punishment for these thieves and yes they are thieves as they are stealing from our generosity. We must revisit out food stamp program and supply life saving food not steak and Ice Cream. Bologna worked wonders for Sheriff Joe. It will for the USDA also. Don t take Baloney from elected officials, Never serve me a Pot Pie, make bologna a staple of the food stamp diet and pray for all the men who won the war on a diet of SPAM. Well the old Bones are tired. The Lord willing we will chat again next week. Charles Melton cmltn42@yahoo
