FROM: CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY News Release For Immediate Release: August 7, 2014; 11:30 a.m. Precautions taken prior to arrival of approaching storms County of Kaua‘i remains under tropical storm warning LĪHU‘E - In light of the potential impact of the approaching Iselle and Julio storm systems, state and county officials on Kaua‘i have taken a number of precautionary measures. Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. has issued an emergency declaration in order to provide relief from potential disaster damages, losses and suffering, and to protect the health, safety and welfare of the residents of Kaua‘i and Niihau. The Emergency Operations Center has been activated with the mayor, representatives from county, state and federal agencies on the island, including FEMA, along with other entities involved in emergency response. Residents are encouraged to shelter in place if at all possible; however, emergency shelters have been designated at the following locations on an as-needed basis: Hanalei Elementary School - in case of flash flooding only Kīlauea Neighborhood Center Kapa‘a High School - pet friendly Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center Kaua‘i Humane Society - pets only Kalāheo Elementary School - pet friendly Waimea High School - pet friendly Please do not report to any of the shelters until an announcement has been made that they are open. For persons with special needs and/or mobility issues, the following shelters would be appropriate: Kīlauea Neighborhood Center; Kapa‘a High School; Kalāheo Elementary School and Waimea High School. Persons with special needs who come to shelters should bring caregivers, medications and other supports as necessary. People evacuating to shelters should bring food, water, medicine and any other items they may need while away from home. For pet friendly shelters, pets must remain in crates or kennels. Remember to bring food and water for your pets. County offices and services will be open tomorrow until 12 p.m. The Kaua‘i Bus will operate its normal schedule tomorrow until 12 p.m. as well, unless conditions worsen. Any other changes to county operations will be announced. All county beach parks are closed due to potentially hazardous ocean conditions. All public schools on Kaua‘i will be closed tomorrow. The Port of Nāwiliwili will be closed tomorrow to commercial water operations starting at 4 a.m., while land operations at the facility will remain open. No coastal evacuations have been issued as of yet. Evacuate only if directed to do so by local officials or if your home is vulnerable to high winds or flooding. Persons living near the shore should be prepared to evacuate quickly if building surf threaten your home. The Līhu‘e Sunshine Market will not be held on Friday, Aug. 8. The four HI-5 bottle redemption centers that are operated by Kaua‘i Community Recycling Services (KCRS) will be closed from Friday, Aug. 8 to Monday, Aug. 11. The centers are located in Kīlauea behind the Kaua‘i Mini-Golf, in Kapa‘a in the Arzadon Industrial Park, in Kōloa near the fire station and Kekaha near the old sugar mill. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion as conditions can change quickly in a tropical cyclone. At ports, docks and marinas, perform the prescribed preparations according to your emergency operations plan. If you live on a boat, begin to safely secure your craft, and make plans to leave it for adequate land-based shelter. Small craft should return to port or seek safe harbor. The Tropical Storm Warning for Kaua‘i and Niihau remains in effect until further notice. For weather updates, stay tuned to the NOAA weather radio or local media.
