FROM LICENSE TABS TO AMAZING GRACE (youtube/watch?v=DDDlxmsciqY) I just renewed the license tabs on my car, giving thanks to God while doing so. Wait a minute -- giving thanks to God for something as simple as renewing license tabs? What happened years ago now, and in years since then, I have had trouble getting my license tabs renewed whether it be due to needing to pay with cash or a check instead of credit for them, needing to have a standard emissions test to prevent too much air pollution done beforehand which of course I had to pay for, or my previous car failing its emissions test so that expensive repairs were needed to fix the emissions system before I could renew the tabs (during which the mechanic is sales-riding you so badly by recommending so many questionable repairs you wonder if you should just buy a new car), or needing to wait before putting them on since the weather was too cold (the tabs are brittle) or too wet (counteracting the adhesive) to apply them until it dried up and became sunny and warm, or if it was the tabs getting damaged after I put them on through some means so that I had to purchase replacement tabs. All of which made something at its most basic form as simple as putting a sticker on my license plate a nightmare. That is why I give thanks to God for it. Not just because the weather turned warm and dry by the time got enough sleep yet woke up early enough this afternoon (I work nights) to take care of my check at the bank so I was able to purchase new license tabs where I got groceries from (no emissions test needed this year) at the same time prior to that department closing and to apply it to my clean, warm and dry license plate before it turned cold and wet again, but also because I know from experience that something as simple as buying a license tab can turn into a nightmare. Along the same lines, I remember a pastor giving a sermon critical of how a prominent individual had asserted that if one was right with God and such that one would not suffer inconveniences such as problems with their bathroom plumbing. The book of Job in the Bible (Old Testament) quite vividly illustrates how even the good suffer, but as Job points out, at the same time as the good suffer it is still understood how much God still does for them, hence nightmares about license plate tabs or troubles with plumbing are indeed just ... inconveniences given the wonder of what the grace of God does for us. Perhaps most vividly illustrating that was that after I returned home, bemused about making the above observation, was that I received the message that my remaining grandfather had passed away in the morning while I was sleeping and just after his wife and thus my grandmother had passed away only about a month ago. Gods grace is indeed truly amazing, not for license tabs or for trouble free plumbing, but because God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
