FROM OUR FRIEND PROF. JOHN HATCHER: There isnt much that is more fun than being part of a local election, and each year the local television stations and our daily newspaper rely on us and our students for help tabulating election results at the local polling places. Some organizations pay money; others pay in pizza. Either way, its a great experience. Below is the contact information for the three media outlets looking for our help. If you are a teacher, Id encourage you to give your students some extra credit for doing this work. If you are a student, Id encourage you to do this and use it to take a first step in networking with our local media (most of which hire many of our graduates). Here are the details: DULUTH NEWS TRIBUNE and Northland NewsCenter Contact: Tina Gajda, (218) 723-5384, tgajda@duluthnews Details: This is the only one of the three opportunities that pays students for their work. Some travel is involved and access to a vehicle would be desirable. Students will go to polling places around Duluth, collect the results for each race, phone them in to the newsroom. If students are interested, they can also visit the newsroom and see the election coverage taking place. WDIO TV Contact: Jon Ellis jellis@wdio or call 218-279-7723. Details: We’re looking for people who can go to a Duluth polling place when the polls close, write down the results for key races, and phone them into the station. This helps us get election results on the air more quickly. Students can also take this opportunity to watch the 6:00 and/or 10:00 newscasts in the studio and see the newsroom in action. Some of our current newsroom employees first entered the station as a pollwatcher! Pollwatchers should arrive by 6:30 for pizza and snacks in our studio, or arrive earlier to watch the 6:00 newscast in-studio. We’ll then give brief instructions and directions to their polling place. Pollwatchers should try to come in their own vehicle so we can reach as many polling places as possible. (We will provide maps to the polling places.) The polls close at 8:00. After getting the results and phoning them in, students can come back to the station, if they choose, to see the newsroom in action and watch the 10:00 newscast live. We’re located at 10 Observation Road in the Duluth “antenna farm” (between Skyline Parkway and Lake Superior College). KBJR TV Contact: Shannon Kinley Details: We need a group of volunteers on election night (nov. 5) from 7 to 9 at the latest. Your job will be to simply go to a polling place and call the station with the final numbers/results of each race. YOU WILL GET FREE PIZZA.
