FROM SHOW BUSINESS WEEKLY --- SOUNDS OF THE SEASON: A THEATER CD ROUND-UP: The New York theater community is now setting its sights on the new plays and musicals (and revivals of old plays and musicals) that are on the horizon for the upcoming new season. Yet several of the musicals of the season just passed are now beginning to appear on CD, and in digital downloads, courtesy of the great Ghostlight Records. Here are some recent releases that all musical theater fans are going to want to check out: The Bridges of Madison County: The stunning performances of Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale live on in this gorgeously rendered recording of the year’s most honored score (both Tony and Drama Desk Awards for composer/lyricist Jason Robert Brown.) Simply put, this is contemporary theater singing at its most electrifying. Don’t miss it. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical: On disc, the phenomenal Jessie Mueller sounds even more like Carole King than she does in the theater! It’s not just an uncanny imitation, it’s a full-voiced, enthralling interpretation of the vocal talents of one of our most gifted singer/songwriters by one of our most gifted musical theater actresses. And Mueller gets great support from a hard-working supporting cast. Murder for Two: The hilarious, quick-changing performances of original Off-Broadway cast members Jeff Blumenkrantz and Brett Ryback are wonderfully preserved on this recording of the hit musical comedy whodunit, written by Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair. Two is great company. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder: The newly minted Tony-winning Best Musical is a thorough delight on disc, losing almost none of its in-performance charm and revealing its diabolically clever score by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak in even sharper detail. “Why are all the Dysquiths dying?” is but one of the musical questions it poses, and you’ll die laughing listening to every delectable number over and over again.
