FROM: SUNDAYS OPEN Q & A Matthew 14:24-33 KJV But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. (25) And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. (26) And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. (27) But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. (28) And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. (29) And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. (30) But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. (31) And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? (32) And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. (33) Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. What is spiritual meaning about these verses? Is there a tie- in and referring after may 21.? ANSWER Sinking into the sea is a picture of being destroyed for our sins. Micah 7:19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Our sins were cast into the sea (the depths) in Christ. He went down to the bottom of the seas for our sakes. Jonah 2:2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. 3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Through the saving faith of Christ, we our freed from the demands of Gods law that would drown us as Pharaoh and the Egyptians were drowned. But from our perspective (which Peters momentary weakness illustrates) it appears at times as though we will be drowned in the depths of the sea after all. And yet, since we have truly become born again and truly had our sins paid for this is not possible any longer. Christ will always be there to catch us from actually going down into the depths. I dont see how we can relate this account to our present time, except, that since we are all being severely tried we could say that it certainly appears at times to us as though we are sinking fast into the depths. But the true child of God will be caught and upheld by Christ. And will not drown.
