FROM THE 1450 WNBY NEWS CENTER (12-01-14) Today is Cyber Monday, giving shoppers another chance to get big discounts, but this time, online, instead of going to a store. Since first being dubbed Cyber Monday in 2005, the Monday after Thanksgiving has become one of the biggest online shopping days of the year. While many shoppers will be scanning the internet searching for bargains this Cyber Monday, local retailers say if youre more a hands on shopper, you should head to your local shop. Michigan Retailers Association President and CEO Jim Hallan says some shoppers like to browse online but still like that face-to-face interaction you get at a local retailer. He says most people like to touch and feel a product before making a purchase and also knowing, if they have any problems with the product, it can be returned to their local retailer. A battle is underway in Lansing over a device that allows business owners to hide sales and reduce the sales tax owed to the state. A bill allowing the Michigan Department of Treasury to require certain business owners subject to the sales tax, to install equipment to prevent the use of such zapping devices, is now before the Michigan House. The goal of the bill is to crack down on any company which tries to rig cash register sales figures in order to avoid sending sales tax revenue to the treasury department. WNBY SPORTS!!! With Pittsburgh, the Ravens and Browns all losing, Cincinnati moved a game-and-a-half ahead of each in the AFC North after beating the Buccaneers, 14-13, in Tampa. Miami tries to stay in the mix for an AFC Wild Card spot tonight at the Jets on Monday Night Football. The tenth-ranked Michigan State Spartans are waiting to learn their bowl fate after ending the regular season with a 34-10 win over Penn State on Saturday. Michigan State is 10-and-2 and 7-and-1 in the Big Ten. Meanwhile, Michigan will not be heading to a bowl game after losing to Ohio State 42-28 over the weekend.
