FROM THE CITY City of Temecula officials announced that construction of the Main Street Bridge over Murrieta Creek will be completed and open to traffic May 8, 2014. “This new ‘rustic’ bridge will not only provide a safe crossing for vehicles and pedestrians, it will complement the upcoming creek improvement project being processed by the Army Corps of Engineers” stated Mayor Edwards. The bridge replacement project started in April of 2013 when the City’s contractor Granite Construction began demolishing the existing 7-span concrete bridge that was constructed in 1945. The new bridge is a 155-foot steel truss structure that completely spans Murrieta Creek and includes architectural features that tie in with the theme of Old Town, including stamped concrete riding and walking surfaces, and stone columns that mimic the north and south gateway arches on Old Town Front Street. The new crossing includes 10-foot wide pedestrian sidewalks separated from the travelled lanes with mid-span viewpoints, Old Town Style street lights, as well as accent lighting to illuminate the structure after dark. The roughly $5.0M construction cost was primarily funded through a Highway Bridge Program (HBP) grant the City secured through Caltrans and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The City will be celebrating the completion of the project and opening the bridge following a ribbon cutting ceremony taking place at 10:30 AM on Thursday, May 8, 2014.
