FROM THE NEWSROOM: A budding, problem-solving idea began to form at Thompson’s Board of Selectmen meeting this week. Selectman Kirsten Forrester made a motion that the Board begin taking steps to come up with a comprehensive and cost-effective plan for paving the town’s roadways. Many roads are currently in need of work; however, over an indefinite number of years, roads have been slated for repair in the beginning of the budget season, but many remain neglected by the end of the fiscal year. Forrester named several potential causes for the problem, including the fact that Thompson is one of the few towns that pave its own roads instead of contracting the work out. In line with that, she also noted that costs have ended up higher than budgeted, because only the cost of paving material was taken into account, with labor, maintenance, and equipment costs not considered. Contracting the work out will not necessarily get more work done, though, which is why the Selectmen are now hoping to look into other options that may prove more efficient. Either way, the general consensus of the Board is quality over quantity; any road repair that the approximately $600,000 annual paving budget allows should be done correctly, in order to ensure longevity. The Board is looking to come up with a ten-year plan, in which time the roads that are most in need of fixing should be attended to completely. Tune in for the full report.
