FROM THE NEWSROOM: A cool, refreshing drizzle greeted crowds of runners and spectators who showed up for the St. James 5k Race on Saturday morning in downtown Danielson. The annual event was started by three women with a vision. “The school is always looking for new ways to raise money, and we were all runners,” said one of the women, Jennifer Lipke. She, Heather Duquette, and Laura Douglas are now the co-chairs of this event which is profitable as well as a good time. The race consisted of 48 runners when it first began—now, in its 6th year, over 250 runners, walkers and teams participated, even despite the wet weather. The turn-out this year was the highest yet. “Each year we’ve gotten bigger and bigger,” said Lipke, who also mentioned that there are always new features—such as this year’s Kid’s Fun Run, for children under the age of 10. The 3.4 mile 5k road race lead runners from St. James to Ellis Tech, then down North Street and up Main Street back to St. James. Local runner Jack Houlker claimed the top spot in the male division, with a time of 19:12.9. This year was his 4th year competing in the race. Starting in is first year as the 4th place runner, he moved up to 3rd the next year, 2nd last year—and now, four years later, has claimed First Place. In the female division, 15-year-old Sabrina Chester crossed the finish line at an impressive 20:31.17. As for the amount of funds that were raised for the school, event organizers can’t yet give an amount—but, nevertheless, it was certainly a successful year.
