FROM THE NEWSROOM: Administrators and faculty at Pomfret Community School feel that their building at the corner of Routes 169 and 101 has gone too long without proper signage—but that may soon change, depending upon Planning and Zoning deliberations and in conjunction with feedback from town residents. Currently, P&Z regulations do not allow for large signs on town building properties. However, Pomfret Community School is now in the process of putting in a sign at the main entrance of the school that will incorporate an art project done by students. This years project will become an annual installation, involving a contest among students. The goal, though, is to get a sign that “is a little larger than Planning and Zoning allows at this point,” said Lisa Dyer, Business Manager for PCS. According to Dyer, school officials want to install a larger sign in hopes of slowing down traffic and because “a lot of people that pass by miss the fact that theres a school—theres no real signage out there.” In hopes of fielding some feedback from the community, the school has purchased a banner that will be put up a little farther back from the road and be a little larger than the actual size allowed “for readability purposes,” as a demonstration of what the school is going for regarding their representation. “Well get some feedback from the public to see would they like a sign, would they not like a sign – hopefully well get some support, and some people, maybe, to go to Planning and Zoning and help us get a sign simply just as Pomfret Community School,” said Dyer. The issue regarding restrictions on the size of signs is expected to be discussed in up-coming Planning and Zoning Commission meetings. Tune in for the full report.
