FROM THE NEWSROOM: Disposal of household hazardous waste was a topic of discussion which received some attention and will receive more in the future from the Thompson Board of Selectmen, and likely from other towns in the region as well. According to Selectman Kerstin Forrester, the town has not held a hazardous waste day in over three years, since November of 2011. “Were definitely due for one. I think thats an important service for any municipality to have,” she said. Forrester also brought up a regional idea that was discussed at a recent meeting of the Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments (NECCOG). She said that, while the idea is still young, NECCOG has applied for a state grant which would enable a study to be done on the topic of establishing a centralized, all-year-round, household hazardous waste site for all municipalities in NECCOG. Brooklyn has been tentatively discussed as the location for such a future endeavor. Regardless of what may happen regionally, and because such measures would likely take some time, the Board has decided that it is time to consider what the next move will be to safely dispose of household hazardous waste in Thompson. First Selectman Paul Lenky is considering looking into contractors that may work with the town to remove waste. A hazardous waste day will most likely be initiated, and Forrester said that the Board will be asking the Transfer Station Advisory Committee to help coordinate a date. The amount of funding required by the town to hold a hazardous waste day is not yet known, and there would likely be some limitations to how much waste each resident is allowed to dispose of—any restrictions are expected to be published prior to a hazardous waste day in the case that it is established.
