FROM THE NEWSROOM: Earlier tonight, the Thompson Fire Protection - TopicsExpress

FROM THE NEWSROOM: Earlier tonight, the Thompson Fire Protection and Advisory Committee met, where they discussed the financial concerns that continue to plague the volunteer departments, and what they can do to hopefully find a solution. Down the road, Kirsten Forrester, chair of the committee, says that the town will be forced to pick up the necessary expenses so that the fire departments can continue to function. However, as with any increase in taxes, it is possible it will be met with resistance from the citizens, so it is important that the departments inform the public so there are no surprises. Forrester went on to say that Woodstock implemented an oversight group several years ago, and that the town picked up the tax increase to fund the fire departments, so that the firefighters could focus on finding and training volunteers. There is a hope to work in a similar system in Thompson, but for now, Forrester gave each of the departments ‘homework’ to find ways to better educate citizens so that they can hopefully give more support to the volunteer forces in town. Tune in tomorrow for the full report.
