FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Plainfield Wednesday, the Board of Finance - TopicsExpress

FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Plainfield Wednesday, the Board of Finance voted to move the towns $45.2 million 2014-15 budget proposal to town meeting, following a public hearing earlier this week that garnered widespread approval. The proposal includes $10.9 million on the general government side and $34.3 million for the school district. Some finance board members expressed concern that certain positions are still underpaid in the budget as proposed, particularly the second selectmen positions and the registrars. Chairwoman Vickie Meyer – who acknowledged that Plainfield pays many positions less than surrounding towns, due in part to Plainfields general lack of wealth – said these are issues that can be looked into, and possibly changed, in the next budget season. As for the debate that emerged about whether salaries should be based on positions or based on the qualifications and performances of individual employees, Meyer said thats a matter of Human Resources discretion and something the Board has very little power over. The possibility of increasing pension funding is also a matter the board plans to address in the next budget season. The town meeting on the budget has been scheduled for May 19th at 7 p.m. in the town hall. The proposal is a zero mil increase over the current year. If the budget passes at town meeting it does not need to go to referendum. Tune in for the full report.
