FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Thompson, town officials have been brainstorming ways to get the word out to residents about upcoming budget referendum dates, so that more people can make it out to the polls to make their votes count. Some of the biggest obstacles that officials face happen to be state laws and regulations, which according to one Board of Education member, Chris Eichner, have become more prescriptive in things that they expect the local Board to do. This spells out restrictions for local governing groups, and those in Thompson have expressed their concern regarding this matter ever since last months 10% voter turn-out rate at the budget referendum. General consensus is that the word needs to get out so that nobody is left in the dark. But how? School Superintendent Dr. Michael Jolin stated that, in the past couple of years, the school has not been allowed to send information home with students or have it mailed out, and a previous one call now alert system is no longer allowed for getting out information above upcoming budget votes. The policy used to allow teachers and administrators to notify parents about voting days, and can no longer be used because calls were made from under the schools roof. The Board of Educations attorney has also advised the Board to not place informative signs on school property, as they may show bias, and having signs made or printing flyers in the first place would be a violation in itself, as it would be paid for by public funding. Thompsons second budget referendum is just weeks away, and will take place from noon to 8 p.m. on June 24th. Tune in for the full report.
