FROM THE NEWSROOM: NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) — New Britain police are warning of telephone scams targeting Latino residents. Police said Friday its received numerous complaints in the last month about a scam by callers speaking Spanish and identifying themselves as representatives of Connecticut Light & Power. Callers falsely tell residents that the utility has detected excessive voltage being drawn from the targets home and it must be fixed immediately. The person being called is warned of a fire without a fix. The person being called is told to provide money immediately on a prepaid money card. Callers are told that failure to do so will result in electricity cut off. Police advise anyone receiving such a call to hang up and notify the subsidiary of Northeast Utilities. A CL&P spokesman did not immediately return a call.
