FROM THE NEWSROOM: Police statewide are cracking down on texting and cell phone use while driving in an initiative that kicks off today. Putnam Deputy Police Chief Lee Konicki says distracted driving has become a growing concern over the past couple years, leading authorities to increase enforcement which will last several weeks. Konicki stressed that cell phone use while driving is not only a violation of the law, but its also extremely dangerous; while some may mistakenly believe its okay to pull the phone out quickly at a red light or a stop sign, Konicki confirmed this is not true, and you must pull over to the side of the road or a parking lot and put your vehicle in park first. The Deputy Chief also said he believes texting while driving is much more common than citation records suggest, explaining that many drivers look for marked police vehicles and are able to elude law enforcement; but, he says, a quick drive in any vehicle other than a police cruiser will result in spotting many more violators of this law. If youre caught using your cell phone while driving, Konicki said you could face “significant fines.” Tune in for the full report.
