FROM THE NEWSROOM: Pomfret officials are seeking volunteers to maintain the 14 cemeteries in town, which despite the three commissions overseeing them, still need physical workers. First Selectman Maureen Nicholson describes cemetery maintenance as near equal to a full-time job, making the responsibility suitable for a retired individuals as is currently the case; the problem is, she said, retired individuals often face health problems and physical limitations. With the cemeteries falling by the wayside little by little, and prices of maintenance significant – an estimated $6,500 a year for the Abington and $1,700 a year for the Old Abington cemeteries alone – Nicholson said its more than just a matter of mowing and picking up branches; its also a lot of work to place and remove flags for veterans on appropriate holidays. For example, recently a $200 grant from Wolf Den Grange was offered to help put up Veterans flags, but no volunteers wee available to take advantage of the offer. While options such as utilizing the Boy Scouts or work from prison inmates were discussed, an exact solution has not been secured yet – Nicholson explains that when it comes to prison inmates, the question of who would supervise them made things difficult.
