FROM THE NEWSROOM: Pomfret passed its $12.3 million budget at an Annual Town Meeting Thursday night. The budget, which has a tax increase of .34 mils, will go into effect on July 1. First selectman Maureen Nicholson said she is thrilled the budget was voted through and described it as “responsible and responsive to the economic climate.” Nicholson said she felt the Boards of Finance, Education and Selectman worked well together and made many compromises to put together the best budget proposal possible. The vote was not unanimous, with a handful of people turning the budget down. Nicholson said it was hard to know why some citizens said “no” to the budget, due to a lack of feedback. According to the First Selectman, she had encouraged people to provide their input throughout the budget season -- with a place on the towns web to leave comments, workshops, meetings and Public Hearings. Pomfret citizen Frank Alaman, said he had voted in favor of the budget. He called the it reasonable and felt the school hadnt suffered from any of the cuts made to the Board of Educations budget, which he noted as his top priority. One “small reservation” Alaman posed was that, while both budgets had been cut, the First Selectman had not made any cuts toward a $5,000 raise to her salary. He suggested that the $5,000 could have been donated to a group or organization in town who could use it, and felt this would raise the publics opinion of the First Selectman. Tune in for the full report.
