FROM THE NEWSROOM: Republican candidate for the 29th Assembly District State Senator seat John French , a member of the Windham Board of Education, released statements to WINY criticizing his Democratic opponent Mae Flexer, a sitting state representative, for her reported opposition to Frenchs “Gas Tax Holiday” campaign events. According to French, Flexer is “disMAED,” making a pun on her first name, by his campaign events that involve paying for up to $5 worth of gas for customers at area gas stations in protest of what he considers excessive gas taxes in the state; French called gas tax holidays his unique way of connecting with citizens of Connecticut. French, who called Flexer a career politician, denied accusations he is trying to “buy votes,” insisting his events are compliant with Connecticut election laws; he said the main goal of his tax holidays is to make Connecticut citizens aware they pay almost 50 cents in state taxes per gallon, one of the highest rates in the country, and the highest in New England; he cited a source stating the tax rate in Rhode Island is 16 cents less per gallon, in Massachusetts, 23 cents less according to the American Petroleum Industry (API) July 2014 report. The republican candidate pointed toward statistics that indicate Connecticut suffers from some of the poorest condition road roads in the country, saying that adds further injury to how much money Connecticut drivers are wasting on fuel. French stated: “Why Mae? Why do we pay the most and get the worst? Incompetence or malfeasances seem the only two logical answers. That, Ms. Flexer, is why it’s such a big issue.” He further criticized Flexer for voting for the highest tax hike in the states history, which included a hike in the diesel tax.
