FROM THE NEWSROOM: STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) — School bus drivers in Stonington have narrowly rejected a proposal to establish a union. The Day of New London reports that the vote Wednesday was 18-to-16 to reject the union. Teamsters union official Tom Schlink said the local is investigating what he said are allegations of improper conduct by management at the company, First Student. He said managers threatened and coerced workers. The newspaper reported that a First Student spokesman could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Jessica Rogers, a driver who opposed the union organizing attempt, accused union backers of threatening co-workers with phone calls and unannounced visits to their homes. Issues included higher pay and benefits. Other First Student locations in the area, including those in Norwich, Lisbon, Sprague and Bozrah, are unionized.
