FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Killingly Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of adopting the amended property maintenance code and regulations concerning blight, and to present the changes to town residents in a public hearing and special town meeting on Tuesday, February 10th. The Town Council was able to agree upon the ordinance, which was recently amended by the Town Council Ordinance Subcommittee. As previously reported, a need for revisions was decided upon in a public hearing held in November. Killingly Town Manager Sean Hendricks admitted that he had been “a little premature” in asking for last falls public hearing without having consensus from the Town Council first. “Now we have that consensus, so Im confident sending it to public hearing,” said Hendricks on Tuesday night. Hendricks said that there was not a lot of substantial language change made to the ordinance, but the alterations that were made constituted an effective adjustment on the balance between safety precautions and property owner rights. Hendricks also stated that he does not believe that the ordinance can be considered onerous or prohibitive, and repeated that when it comes to enforcing it, “what we want to see is friendly resolutions.” The ordinance draft will be presented at the 7 p.m. public hearing at the Town Hall, followed by a special town meeting to be held at 8 p.m.. Also to be discussed and voted upon is the acceptance of two private-owned land donations at the intersection of Route 12 and Rock Avenue, which would allow the town to widen the Rock Avenue entrance by Spirol.
