The nominations occurred at last night’s town-wide Republican caucus held in the Putnam Middle School Auditorium. Barney Seney, a retired Sergeant of the Connecticut State Police force and current Selectman for the Town, has been nominated for Mayor. As a previous First Selectman for the Town of Thompson, Barney has extensive experience as the principal leader of a municipality. After moving to Putnam several years ago, he became heavily involved in our community, successfully running for the Board of Selectman in the last municipal election. Barney serves the public not only as Selectman, but also as a member of the Putnam High School Building Committee and the Charter Revision Committee. He is a past Commander of the American Legion and current member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Barney was recognized in 2012 by the American Legion for his service in the Army during the Vietnam War. Doug Cutler Jr., former State Representative for the 51st District and President of the East Putnam Fire District, was nominated to serve as a member of the Board of Selectman. Doug has served as President of the district for the past fourteen years; he is instrumental in the on-going, large-scale project to build a new fire house in East Putnam. Doug is the owner of Cutler Concrete, a business he has been operating in Putnam since its inception in 1999. Barney Seney, as Mayoral candidate, has asked Doug to join him on the ticket as a candidate for Selectman and as his presumptive Deputy Mayor. John Smith, presently serving his first term as Selectman for the Town, has been re-nominated as Selectman. John was a long-standing member of the Zoning Commission for the Town. He is also a founder of the Gravestone Restoration Project, a non-profit group that restores gravestones and other monuments. John is co-owner of Smith Brothers Tube and Tire in East Putnam. Peter Benoit has been nominated as a candidate for the Board of Selectmen. Peter currently serves the Town as a Board of Finance member. He is a local businessman, basing his company, Benpe Sales and Consulting, in Putnam for the last eight years. Peter is very active in our community: serving as a member, Treasurer, and also past president of the Putnam Rotary Club; a past president of the Northeast Connecticut Chamber of Commerce; a past vice chairman of the Town’s Zoning Board; past manager of the Putnam Little League, and volunteer at Day Kimball Hospital, among many other volunteer positions. Don Steinbrick, long time Putnam resident and retired postal worker, was nominated for a seat on the Board of Selectmen. Don has an extensive history of civic volunteerism and community involvement. He previously served on the Board of Finance for the Town and is frequently in attendance at various town board and committee meetings. Don received a National Preservation Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution in 2012 for his work on the restoration of the Grove Street memorial to the Civil War veterans. He served in the Air Force in the Air Police and is an advocate for veterans, working closely with several local veterans’ organizations. Don is the Chaplain for the American Legion. "
