FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Putnam Volunteer Fire Department held an open house earlier today to honor the memory of two young girls, Ava and Alexis Auger, who died in a January 2013 fire, as well as to spread fire safety awareness to as many people as possible. Although the day was a rainy one, locals and members of the fire department alike gathered comfortably in the fire department’s garage. Those who came were greeted by friendly firefighters, fire trucks that were open for all who were interested to enter, and of course, plenty of donuts, coffee, and pizza. Not only that, volunteer fire members were more than happy to give advice and hand out pamphlets on maintaining fire awareness, and they offered free and efficient smoke detectors to those in need of them. Kids were highly excited by the combination of donuts and fire trucks, and climbed in and out of the vehicles, inspecting, exploring, manning driver’s seats, and even ringing the engine bell. Parents were pleased to provide their children with such interactive education. The event was the second of its kind, and Fire Marshall Norm Perron said that he hopes there will be another fire prevention program held in October at the new East Putnam Fire Department, which is now under construction and should be finished by June. He stressed the importance of implementing adequate fire safety precautions in households and how the aim of these programs is to spread awareness and to prevent fire tragedies from occurring in the future.
