FROM THE NEWSROOM: Those who have enjoyed fishing near the East Killingly dams may have noticed the recent signs that now prohibit access to the property – something that comes as a shock to many area residents, who say they had become accustomed to having fairly free access to that location. Killingly Town Manager Sean Hendricks responded to comments made at last weeks town council meeting with Wright Holdings Inc. concerning the issue, saying that while residents have become attached to the dams and ponds over the years, its still private property -- and that means that Wright can restrict or allow access as they see fit. The historic nature of the property is a sticking point for those advocating that the dams be saved – with residents arguing Wrights obligation to maintain the land because of that. But Hendricks says that is not exactly true. “These dams arent on the historic register, so outside of the historic or emotional value that the residents have to it, theres no official historic value,” said Hendricks. There is a hope to find a way to maintain the land as public, but for now, the dams are private property, so the wishes of the current owner must be upheld, according to Hendricks. Tune in for the full report.
