FROM THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE STUDENT ACTION TO REINSTATE STEVEN SALAITA In response to recent events transpiring at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign involving Dr. Steven Salaita, we the students of UIUC demand the following from Chancellor Phyllis Wise and the administration of UIUC: -The immediate reinstatement of Dr. Salaita with as a tenured faculty member in the Department of American Indian Studies. -Full and fair compensation to Dr. Salaita for time missed during which he would otherwise have been working. -Immediate increased transparency in the faculty hiring process--as a public university, UIUC has the responsibility to make public all intended faculty changes as well as take public comment in regards to any change. -The creation of the University Administrative Oversight Committee consisting of faculty representatives (both tenured and otherwise), members of the Student Senate, student campus leaders, and experienced staff charged with the responsibility of holding administrative members of the University (at any level) publicly accountable for their actions in connection with UIUC. Such a committee would have the power to issue a vote of no confidence regarding any administrative member including the sitting chancellor of the University--a vote resulting in 90% no confidence would necessitate a campus-wide vote open to ALL students, faculty, and staff. A 2/3 no confidence campus vote would trigger processes by which the administration would SIGNIFICANTLY alter its course of action or otherwise tender their resignation within one calendar year of the initial campus-wide vote. Furthermore, upon appointment to any administrative position at UIUC or its financial partners, any member of the University Administrative Oversight Committee will forfeit their seat on the committee, effective upon appointment. No administrative member of UIUC or its financial partners may, at any point in time, hold a seat on the University Administrative Oversight Committee. -A written guarantee from the Chancellor stating that no situation such as the current situation will happen again. More explicitly, University administration will provide a minimum of two months public notice regarding the removal of any faculty member, including non-tenure track faculty, for any reason barring particularly egregious actions to be defined by the University Administrative Oversight Committee. University administration will then be subject to direction by the University Administrative Oversight Committee when deemed appropriate by a majority vote of the Committee in addition to appropriate public discourse and critique. -A full revision of the UIUC Resolution on Diversity Values Statement ensuring that political beliefs are EXPLICITLY protected by the University insofar as any political statements made by UIUC community members will not in any way be considered grounds for termination, suspension, revocation of offered employment, or any other disciplinary action. These demands will be met immediately with the exception of the creation of The University Administrative Oversight Committee and adjoining guarantee which will be formed within the academic semester (Fall 2014) due to the time it would take to organize such a committee and explicitly define its purpose, powers, and responsibilities. Until these demands are met, we, the students, will not be silent.
