FUNDING FOR THE ARTS...Simon Mellor told us at a conference on the arts yesterday that despite billions pouring in from the National Lottery libraries will be closing down and all arts services cut. what he did not say is that with the inpouring of billions of pounds the Arts Council and other bureaucracies are grabbing the money to bolster staff salaries, bonuses, etc. Grants are given for refurbishment of buildings rather than to artists, writers, filmmakers and directors. I don`t give a hang if you live in London or Plymouth. Awards should be made in perpetuity to artists, writers, directors, producers and others. Venues play no role in this. Let the owners of venues make deals with indie businesses. When Lord Longford was alive (G-d Bless Him) he said `Sandra, if I were still Chairman of Sidgwick and Jackson I would see to it that YOU would never be out of a contract.` Age 71 I have been running my Alfred Hitchcock London Walk since 1999 without a pence of support from the Arts Council or any other body.
