FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR ROBERT EDWARD BERNARD SR. ( BOB OR B.B ) WHO PASSED AWAY ON JANUARY 15, 2014 IN LEESBURG FLORIDA He was born in New Bedford, MA, on Jan. 18, 1939 Bob joined the Brunswick Fire Department on Jan. 11, 1965. In April 1976 he was promoted to Lieutenant in the Brunswick Fire Department. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in June 1977 and promoted to Deputy Fire Chief on Feb. 20, 1979. He earned his Associate Degree in Applied Science in Fire Technology on May 25, 1984. While being the Deputy Fire Chief for the Brunswick Fire Department he was also the arson investigator and inspected local Mercantile to be sure they were equipped with the proper fire/smoke detection equipment. He retired from Brunswick Fire Department on Jan. 11, 1985. After retirement went to work at Bath Iron Works (shipyard) as a fire guard and later as a security guard. He retired from Bath Iron Works on Jan. 11, 2011. While in the fire service Bob was the Cumberland County East vice president for the Maine State Federation of Fire Fighters. He organized a Brunswick Fire Department “Field Day” team which later incorporated some of the wives to have their own field day competitions in “water battles.” The department earned many awards for these competitions. He founded and was the first president of Local 1718 of the International Association of Fire Fighters. The Town of Brunswick Fire Department along with the fire department on the Brunswick Naval Air Station put together the Maine State Federation of Firefighters convention parade in Brunswick in 1973. Bob is survived by his wife, Jeanne of 50 years. His son, Robert E. Bernard Jr. A firefighter / paramedic for Ogunquit Fire Department. Daughters, Robin J. Bernard, M.D. (family physician in Nebraska) and Renee L. Bernard (police officer/SRO with Lisbon P.D.). He is also survived by daughter-in-law, Julie and son-in-law, Bryan Elder. He leaves behind nine wonderful grandchildren: Tyson and Julia Bernard, Patty McMurray, Sean, Connor and Kevin Bolduc and Marshall, Katie and Ruby Elder and a great-grandson, Liam Haines. Among his survivors are his sisters, Claire (Ervin) Rice, Annette Taylor, Lorraine (Robert) Lavoie, and two brothers, Ronald (Mary) Bernard and Roger (Deborah) Bernard, his brother-in-laws, Lionel (Spike) Dionne and Leo Scopino and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Edna Dionne (his motivation in moving to Maine) and Jeanne Scopino, his “baby” sister, and his brother-in-law Raymond Taylor. Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 7, 2014 at 10 AM at St. John’s Church on pleasant street (The one way section) in Brunswick, Maine, Interment will be on Monday June 9 th at the New Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta, Maine.
