Ten Reasons to Keep Active, Even in the Winter When it’s cold outside, I need extra motivation to get out the door to the gym or to bundle up my kiddos so they can run around in the snow. As a researcher, I often turn to science when I need a little encouragement. By digging through some research articles, I got just the reminders I needed to prove to myself that we all, young and old, should move our bodies, no matter what the season. Here’s what I found about the benefits of regular physical activity: #1 It improves our moods. Physical activity pumps chemicals into our brains that make us feel content and relaxed. It also reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. Let exercise be our happy pill! #2 It helps us manage our stress. You know what kind of mom I feel like sometimes after a long day of work: psycho-witch with laser beam eyes and a blowtorch mouth. So, what do I do? I drag my boys to the gym (free childcare) and do a short workout. Before: crazy person. After: calm enough to make dinner, throw in a load of laundry, and maybe even read a book or two to my toddler. The scientific evidence shows I’m not the only one who can manage stress with physical activity. #3 It gives us energy. Who doesn’t need more fuel these days? When we get our bodies moving, oxygen and nutrients start shooting into our tissues, and blood starts circulating to our hearts, lungs, and blood vessels. All our organs and muscles start working better, and suddenly we have more energy to devote to the important things in our lives. Yes, please. #4 It helps us sleep better. Physical activity helps us fall asleep and stay in a deeper sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime—it may have the opposite effect! #5 It strengthens our muscles and bones. Physical activity builds our muscles and makes our bones more solid. This is especially true for weight training and high-impact sports, but even simpler activities such as walking work. Stronger, healthier body, anyone? #6 It can positively affect our kids. We hear it all the time: healthy parents make healthy children. It’s not just an old adage. Research shows that active parents tend to have kids who are more active. And, children who exercise are healthier physically and mentally. #7 It prevents diseases. Routine physical activity reduces risk of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and colon and breast cancers. Enough said. #8 It extends our lives. Studies show that those who exercise regularly reduce their risk of death from any cause. #9 It improves quality of life. Who wants to live forever if your quality of life is no good? Physical activity has that covered too—it increases quality of life well into the golden years #10 It helps us to be a healthier weight. If all that’s not enough, then, yes, physical activity speeds up our metabolisms and torches calories and fat. I’m mentioning this one last, because Lord knows, it’s an overrated reason. If the only reason you can think of to get yourself moving is to drop weight; that reason alone is likely not going to be enough to keep you at it. That said, many people need or want to lose weight—be it 10 pounds or a 100, and are a little happier when the number on the scale goes down. And, when we become more physically active, it usually will. However, it takes a while, and watching a scale can be discouraging. The good news is there are plenty of other health benefits that make moving our bodies worthwhile.
