FYI: STRING INSTRUMENT TEACHING ARTIST – JOB OPENING VIOLIN, VIOLA and CELLO TEACHING ARTISTS are needed to teach third and fourth grade beginning instrumental students in a new, Youth Orchestra program in Trenton. The El Sistema-inspired (ESi) program is a partnership between the Trenton Community Music School and the Trenton Public Schools. Inspired by the Venezuelan El Sistema program, the program aims to provide free, high quality music education and performance opportunities for all young people in Trenton and recognizes the power of community music making to affect positive social change. The new program will be launched with a 16-week pilot program at the Grant Elementary School beginning in February 2015. Instruction in violin, viola, cello and musicianship will be offered. The After-school program will work in cooperation with the In-school strings program. Positions for After-school teaching artists are available. An ideal candidate will have experience teaching string instruments in group lessons for elementary school students, experience working with children from diverse communities and passion for and knowledge about music as a tool for social change. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a flexible disposition, and the ability to work well as a part of a team are also highly desired. Position: String Teaching Artist for the ESi Trenton Youth Orchestra program Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (ideally, but negotiable), 3:15-5:30; Feb. 1–May 30, 2015. (Planning and training meetings in January). Preference given to those able to continue employment in 2015-16 school year. Availability to serve as a teaching assistant during one school day per week is a plus. Pay: Hourly rate based on experience. Duties: · Teach group lessons of up to 10 students in 3rd and 4th grades · Lead/assist with orchestra rehearsals of up to 30 students in 3rd and 4th grades · Plan and design curriculum in coordination with other teaching artists · Work with service-learning college students and volunteers · Help with supervision of students, including transition and snack time · Communicate with parents · Attend occasional training and planning meetings Qualifications: · Must be very flexible · Experience teaching beginning strings, especially in group lessons · Experience working with children from diverse communities · Enthusiasm about music as a tool for social change · Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills · Ability to adapt and work as a team member, with colleagues, volunteers and school staff · Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus · Computer and social media skills desirable To apply, please send resume and cover letter to Ronnie Ragen at ronnieragen@gmail with the subject “ESi Youth Orchestra teaching artist position”, by December 15, 2014.
