FYI ....just finished this book. It is an interesting study of the state of Justice and Corrections/Parole in our fair state in the 1930-40s and specifically under the administration of Governor E D Rivers. It offers some insights into how the system that some of us worked in later was shaped by corruptions, racism and politics of the day. Several case studies of infamous cases of the day show how money and influence affected the outcome of justice. Also covers the selling of pardons by the Rivers Administrations and the election of reformer Ellis Arnall from Newnan. The most interesting cases were 2 wealthy young men attending Oglethorpe Univ who were convicted of 2 Thrill Killings during Armed Robberies, George Harsh and Richard Gillogly. Beasley describes events leading to 6 black men being executed in 81 minutes at the then New Tatnall State Prison. Not our States finest hour but an interesting read.I have also ordered a book by Harsh, Lonesome Road. Ironically after being pardoned he went to Canada, joined the RAF, fought in WW2 and was a party in events which are profiled in the book/Movie The Great Escape.
