Facebook has flooded my news feed with Robin Williams’ name, pictures, quotes, and video clips featuring his most memorable roles. Ceaseless numbers of us affected by this talented man by simply allowing him to inject humor into our lives through his incredible work. Scrolling through the comments posted to the articles and tributes for Robin, I can’t help but to be taken back by all the love and understanding expressed by so many. But what astounds me even more is the number of people who choose to ridicule a man, even in his own death. The insensitivity and ignorance is disgusting. No one chooses depression or mental illness any more than one chooses cancer or diabetes. Depression and mental illness are real battles continually fought every day. Suicide is not cowardly. It is not selfish. It is not a sign a weakness. Suicide is not a lack of willpower nor is it attention-seeking. Suicidal feelings result from unbearable pain outweighing coping resources. Suicide is tragic. It is real. Suicide can be prevented. Instead of judging someone who lost their life to suicide, do something about it. Educate yourself and others. Encourage those suffering to seek professional help. Strive to make positive connections with family members, friends and co-workers to show you are there for them. Support the families and friends who have become survivors of suicide. Talk about depression and mental illness. Do not tolerate the stigma. “If we’re going to fight a disease, let’s fight one of the most terrible diseases of all, indifference.” – Patch Adams
