Facebook is NOT restricting your posts. YOU are. This is a short guide written by myself, on tips and tricks I use based on research I have done, and proven works repeatedly. I am fed up with people telling me facebooks money pinching ext. SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS FOR THE UNSIGNED AND INDEPENDENT: When used properly XRPRadios facebook page posts can reach n excess of 10000 people with a high rate of engagement from loyals. Another thing to note is a high percentage of those 10000 are NOT likers of the page. We do not pay for advertisement, nor fake likes, nor engagement boosters. In fact our social advertisement budget is £0 (but costs just a bit of extra time) HOW FACEBOOK WORKS: Facebook works with a saturation restriction engine. This means when you post as your page, facebook sends that out to a small percentage of your page (typically 1-5%). If the post is engaged with (likes/comments/shares), or viewed properly (photos clicked, videos streamed), facebook then sends the post out to more newsfeeds. This continues untill engagement drops. I see many artists/businesses complaining about facebooks restriction. however in doing a bit of research you need to think about it from the users point. Those with 10 friends who have liked 5 pages will probably see all the content they have subscribed to. Those with 1500 friends an 3000 likes (alike myself), would be in hell if they had every update (on average 3 per day) from 4500 sources. SO facebook restricts, not solely for finance as paying for reach can be easily avoided, but for the USERS experience, and without users facebook dies. Facebook will also put most connected with friends and pages in that users feed, and this will again be shared with other users that connect to the original user more often. I.e. i tend to always see my DJs posts, yet bands that are off on tour and cant talk as much i dont tend to notice. SO - How do we advertise on facebook successfully: 1) TARGETING: Facebook as a target post/advertisement option, many people think this is going to restrict their post even more. But think about it closer. If your post is only going to be seen by a percentage, ensure that its the percentage more likely to engage with your post. -Language- Its RARE that people who DONT speak the language will engage with a post, remove them, and if engagement rises it will be distributed to them anyway. -Location- If you are notifying of a gig, make sure its distributed to people who can actually make the gig, again if you keep it tight and local and everyone says i can/cant make it, that will be slowly distributed further afield. 2) INCLUSION: This is also noted as Grass Roots Media - Its alike word of mouth, but without the effort of reminding people. Include and target RELEVANT people into your posts via tagging photos and adding with - this person tags. - both of these will show up (if allowed) on those peoples pages, and therefor by those peoples friends. DO NOT tag ANYONE and EVERYONE because thats just spamming, tho if you know 20 people have pre-ordered your album/product, then tag those people in updates about it, studio days, artwork completed ext, if that person likes your stuff, their friends are bound to, social groups and all that. With gigs, try and get a list together of who is most likely to come, tag them in on all the on the way setting up photos you do throughout the day, keep them excited. again if someones friends knows theres a night out, they may come with. 3)LOVE THE RANDOMS Obviously you will have a lot of friends and family on your facebook page who will support you no matter what. However if what seems to be a randomer likes your page, talk to them, get them engaged on a personal level, every new person has a crowd, and if you can get that one person to act as a kind of online social street teamer, he can lead your activities in that area. - Maybe even give them a name, The Puzzlers have the Confounders, the Band Core Critical have core-ites. Get them excited to engage with you. 4)DONT LIKE FOR LIKE! Like for Likes and Click Farms DESTROY your ability to engage with that page. Remember what was said at the start about facebooks restrictions. If people are liking your page that are not interested, not only is the receipt of posts going to be ignored rather than engaged with, which lowers the likelihood of that post being further distributed, BUT said person is more likely to unlike or hide your page, which in facebooks systems eyes looks like an uninteresting or annoying page, which will then be restricted further. I always see the same people putting all their effort into like for likes, complaining about the fact Facebook is restricting our posts. The only one restricting your posts is yourself. 5) ENCOURAGE ENGAGEMENT: This can be done in many ways: -Questions and Wording: Questions and wording will always be the strongest, instead of HERES OUR ALBUM ART!?!?!?! simply add a What do you think? on the end. Job done. There are more excessive ways to do this but it depends on the market, but for instance a producer should post about equipment they use, and what do other people use. Start up discussions ext. 6) DONT TAG BOMB: Don;t tag everyone in a post randomly, if its just a random list of people in comments or on a share, facebook WILL restrict it. When including people into comments or statuses, type into it. A typical for XRPRadio is mentioning who requested which music ext. -Photoattacks: Get pictures of anyone and everyone you can involve in your page, videos of people singing your tunes or photos of people in your shirt. Even offer £1 cashback or something for everyone who sends in a pic/vid of them with your product, get them to tag friends in it themselves. LIVE performances are fantastic, always get a selfie with the crowd and pop it on your site on the night/morning after, encourage fans to tag themselves in ext. Hopefully some of this will have got rid of some of the rumours. I am currently running 30min-1hr sessions where I will work with you and your brand/band in where i will help you design a campaign that will work for you, teach you some of the tips and tricks of facebook and other social networks and even work with graphics and brand design if it gets that far.
