Faces Could Replace Character-Style Passwords – Researchers Relying on Memory For Users to Log In b4in.org/j58K A new method of passwords involving faces rather than the common character-style is testing positively. Known as Facelock, the new password system would require users to click on a familiar face to unlock their computer or sign in to a program. It sounds a little complicated, but researchers at the University of York have had impressive results with the program. Dr. Rob Jenkins, the lead author of the report published in Peer J, said the program would require people to click on a face they recognize. “Pretending to know a face that you don’t know is like pretending to know a language that you don’t know—it just doesn’t work,” Jenkins was quoted as saying by Time. “The only system that can reliably recognize faces is a human who is familiar with the faces concerned.” Through research, it has been proven people can recognize a familiar face in a variety of images. Unfamiliar faces, though, are generally only recognized in the same photo when seen more than once. Facelock relies on that recollection as people logging in are required to select a familiar face from a grid of different images. Selecting that familiar face, researchers say, will be easy for the user but a hacker trying to gain entry would not recall any of the faces. “Psychological research has shown that familiarity with a face is virtually impossible to lose and so this system is naturally robust,” reported DNA India. “In the current study, users authenticated easily even after a one-year interval. In contrast, disused passwords can be forgotten within days.” More b4in.org/j58K
