Fact 6: One of the common symptoms of Trisomy 18 is clenched fists with overlapping fingers. Sometimes the clenched fists are so bad that they are never able to physically open them. Zayln has clenched fists at times but opens them for us. What we are working on right now and in Occupational Therapy and at home is his tucked thumbs, which is very common. He sometimes opens his hands completely to grasp things and sometimes uses only his 4 fingers on each hand. If we dont have luck with training and stretching the thumbs we will resort to splinting them. You can see in the picture he has them tucked. Many babies leave their hands like this until around 4-6 months old without having Trisomy. At his pediatrician check up on January 23rd we will see if he wants to go ahead and splint or keep trying the stretching and training.
