Factory outings were all the rage in the 1950s and over 500 employees, relatives and friends of clothing manufacturer Wallis and Linnell enjoyed a day trip to Blackpool in 1956. To mark its centenary year the firm chartered a special train of 15 dining cars so that breakfast could be served after the early start - leaving Kettering at 6am on Friday, 7 June. The next day 1,000 shoeworkers from Timpsons (Keterring) and Avalon (Rothwell) left the town on three special trains to Blackpool, Southend and London.
