Facts: 14% of Tanzanian homes have electricity, of those only 3% are in rural areas. But 90% of Tanzanians live in villages. 44% of people have access to water. Life expectancy is 61. On the Human Development Index of the UNDP, Tanzania ranked #152 out of 187 countries. Every day 135 babies die every day and over 400 children under the age of 5 die every day. Children under the age of 18 constitute 51% of the population. 1 in 4 girls aged 15 - 19 has already begun childbearing. 8000 girls drop out of school every year due to pregnancy. 2/3 of children complete primary school, the enrollment rate is 96%. Only 0.27% of Tanzanians go to University. Yet it is a known fact that lack of education is the leading cause of poverty. Women account for 2/3 of those who are illiterate. Yet it is African mamas who often raise their children alone, even if the husband is around and they are responsible for giving their children education.
