Facts: For centuries both mass killings and serial killings were viewed and accepted as acts of violence committed by men, due to the lack of existence in the community that females were the culprits. According to the small amount of research that is readily available to provide an explanation as to why women kill, either emphasizes the victimization that many endure by the hands of a spouse or partner or paints a portrait of perpetrated homicide that extends beyond or outside the realm of the Battered Womens Syndrome defense. While there is little empirical evidence as to why women kill, many researchers believe that some women may kill in the home in self-defense and female killers in the home also plan to kill and kill as a result of self-gratification. Although mass and serial killings are not common acts of criminal behavior perpetrated by women, there is a continuous debate as to the identity of the very first documented offender but research shows evidence dating back to the late 1700s. As in male serial and mass killers, females often have characteristics of antisocial personality disorder, attachment theory, psychopathy, and predatory violence.
