Whole Milk: $3.20 per gallon (2006) $3.32 (Jan. through May 2007) 2 Percent Milk: $3.10 (2006) #.3.22 (Jan. through May 2007) MORE INFORMATION Understanding the synthetic and the natural cow hormone recombinant bovine somatotropin rBST, also known as recombinant bovine somatotropin and sold under the brand name Posilac, is a synthetic version of a naturally-occurring hormone in cows. It is injected in cows and used to boost milk production. The Food and Drug Administration approved rBST in 1993 and has concluded "there is no significant difference between milk from treated and untreated cows." The agency allows milk to be labeled as "rBST-free," though it cannot be identified as "hormone-free," since all milk contains naturally-occurring hormones. Publix announced in late April that it would feature only rBST-free milk under its private label. Sweetbay Supermarket is making a similar change, while dairy companies T.G. Lee and Velda Farms went rBST-free on June 1.
