Facts about pillbugs. Just because life is short and most likely, you had one of these as a pet when you were little and perhaps you do not know that... the Armadillidiidae, or Pillbug is a crustacean and not an insect. They also breathe through gills. Pillbug mamas have a pouch where they keep their eggs. Pillbugs dont urinate. They have a high tolerance for ammonia gas. Which they pass through their exoskeleton. These little creatures drink from their mouths but also, they can drink water through the anus. Like armadillos and cuckoo wasps when threatened, pillbugs curl into a ball. Giving them the sweet name, Roly-polly. Pillbugs eat their own poop. Because every time it poops it loses copper, an essential element which it needs to live and so it eats the poop to get the copper back. Pillbugs molt in two parts. One section one day the other section a couple days later. When sick, they turn blue and also, their blood is blue.
