[Fairy Rings in Singapore] Quite a few of us spotted wild - TopicsExpress

[Fairy Rings in Singapore] Quite a few of us spotted wild mushrooms recently, but did you notice that they often sprout in a ring-like formation? According to a popular folk story in Europe, these circular mushroom growths are the result of fairies dancing in a circle, so these growth patterns are commonly known as ‘fairy rings’. The umbrella-like structure that you see on the ground is actually the reproductive organ, and is just a small part of a very large organism. The main body of the fungus exists as an extensive underground network of root-like structures, known as mycelium. The mycelium grows outwards in a circle, thus forming ‘fairy rings’. Mushrooms tend to sprout when there is an abundance of nutrients, often brought about by the humid environment during rainy spells. We can look forward to seeing more ‘fairy rings’ in rainy December! #sgmushroom #nparksbuzz #nparks #cityinagarden #singapore
