Faith, Gotta Have: It’s A Risk Taker “[Abraham] considered that God is able to raise men even from the dead.” Heb 11:9a Gen 22:14-18; Heb 11:19 We’ve been saying all along dat d life of faith elevates d power of God over circumstances. Dat’s a theological statement, by d way. Ur ability 2 have confidence during d trials of ur life is wrapped up in ur theology, wic is simply wat u believe abt God. Faith is asking u 2 take a risk. U are asked 2 step out there on stuff u don’t kn & u haven’t seen simply bcos some1 told u 2 do it. So are u taking a risk. Nw wat determines whether u take a risk of faith…or any risk? D level of confidence u have in d person asking u 2 take d risk. So d higher ur view of God, d stronger ur theology, d more risks u will b willing 2 take. Abraham was willing 2 take d ultimate risk bcos he was confident of God’s power. Wat power? Well, Abraham believed in God’s power 2 create life out of death. Go all d way back 2 Heb 11:3 & u’ll recall dat faith says dat things we see around us were created by d invisible God, nt out of visible stuff. Faith says, “I wasn’t there wen it happened, bt I stake my claim on God & His Word regardless of wat I see or don’t see, bcos of my understanding of who God is.” See, it’s nt hw much faith u have. Wen u hear people telling u dat u need more faith, dat’s an incorrect analysis. U don’t need a lot of faith. U don’t need a blessed handkerchief or a bottle of water from d Jordan River 2 give u more faith. D issue of faith is nt d amount bt d object of ur faith. If u trust a rowboat 2 get u across d Pacific Ocean, we will have a gud time at ur memorial service, bcos I don’t care hw confident ur faith is, u are going 2 die in d ocean. D issue is d object u put ur faith in. Abraham was confident bcos he knew whom he trusted. We sometimes think Abraham’s faith wasn’t tested 2 d ultimate bcos he never killed Isaac. Forget it. God Himself said Isaac was as good as dead (v.16). Blessed Thursday.
